I used to have irritable bowel syndrome until I cut out all the foods that seemed to aggravate me. I kept a food diary and did an elimination diet and eventually figured out which foods really bothered me. In my case (and everyone is different) I cannot tolerate diet ANYTHING. No sugar free crap, no wheat, no raw brocolli,cauliflower or celery (cooked is OK), also very sugary foods seem to put me over the edge, even if they are natural sugar. Now I am usually gas free. It used to be baaaaaad years ago. So very bad.
