My oldest attends a public school for gifted kids. The level of obsession that the other parents demonstrate regarding the school is mind blowing. The school is currently housed in an old high school--while the school district figures out how to build a school for the growing gifted population. I am in a community on FB of parents. They are almost constantly bitching about stupid stuff like there not being enough playground space (there are two playgrounds on site, and parents come in an volunteer for recess running team as well as unicycling), and the fact that they don't feel there are 'enough' toilets in the building. Toilets!? Really!? Their children are being provided with a top-notch accelerated education in a school with a bunch of other kids who have parents who are equally invested in their children getting a great education. Parent involvement is high. The PTA funds are more than adequate. Currently, as the plans for the new school are drawn up--they're all up in arms about the fact that the new school will not have an auditorium and their perfect little rainbow-farting unicorns might have to sit on the floor of the gym for assemblies. Oh yes, and they're upset that it would be a 1st-8th grade school--all for gifted kids. They don't have to worry about their kids having to mesh with the unwashed general-education kids--but, damn, if they might see older kids when passing in the halls!
