Sometimes I visit a home and something is off, but I can't put my finger on it until I realize I don't see any books.

When I was a kid, reading for pleasure was all about fiction books. Now that I'm an adult, it's all about health and fitness and cook books.

Some of the smartest people I ever met were high school dropouts. I've known many people without degrees who are quite knowledgeable, who keep up with international news, who are interested in history and science, and who are fascinating conversationalists because they are original thinkers, who are artists and musicians. I know more than a few college grads who plodded their way through their classes but seem not to have a thought in their heads. They aren't creative, they aren't deep thinkers, and they don't read for pleasure. If you haven't noticed this you either don't get out much or don't keep your eyes open.

I knew you would say something. You always do. You're getting on my nerves with your know-it-all self. I don't know how your husband stands you.

I don't know any one with a high school education or less who has more general knowledge and better critical thinking skills than many college grads.

I am not a smoker hater at all, more power to ya. But I work in a hospital nursery and feel bad for the babies who are brought to the nursery and their blankets and clothes smell like smoke.

Why do we think the only point to a college education is to get a job? I've found great satisfaction in not being mystified by the general workings of the Universe and information beyond what's provided by a high school education. Most of the people I know wander through life clueless about everything, scared of the world at large, and only comforted by the safety of things they've known since birth. All of which could be cured by a little higher education. Knowledge is power and it's very gratifying.

A college degree in woman's studies?Yeah, maybe if money is no object. Now a degree in chemical or electrical engineering? TOTALLY worth the tuition!

I can smell a smoker. Always. It clings to their fingers and clothes. You think you don't smell because no one is going to be rude enough to say to your face...hey,your hair STINKS. Your fingers STINK. Your clothes...stink. YOU STINK
