On the edge of tears for no real reason today - and I think people are noticing. Thank god I finally have an interview soon...

In response to a confession. Hold up... you think affirmative action needs phased out? The "powers that be" (corporations) will never, ever treat people fairly unless forced to. This has been proven time and time again. Profit driven corporations don't give a shit about the humans working for them. We need unions. We need affirmative action. The people who "take advantage" of these things are a tiny percentage compared to the number of people who've been harmed by corporations.

I kind of see unions as akin to affirmative action. Very needed and essential at one point in time. But at some point they both would ideally be phased out. Yanno, once the powers that be start treating people rightly and justly and equally. Like programs like this are meant to ensure, and then eventually people just DO that because it's the right thing to do. *eyeroll* It's like anything else really, there are good and bad points and aspects, and there will ALWAYS be people that take advantage. Whether it's the unions or the corporations.

I could send good thoughts my way for something going on at work that I’m worried about. Thank you.

I don't know a lot about unions. Are they bad?

In response to a confession. I'm getting ready to go back to the airlines. A friend just asked if I'd applied at Delta, and I said no way - they don't have a union. In this particular job, you definitely want a union behind you should something go wrong, and they also fight for fair treatment and wages. They're not all bad.

In response to a confession. I stopped reading after you mentioned being in a union. Some of the world's most entitled people.

I have PTO that I have to use for both vacation and sick time. I'm supposed get any time off pre-approved by my supervisor but if I'm sick, I just call her to let her know and I fill out my PTO slip afterwards. Our policy is that you can call in sick for one day, but after that, you need doctor's notes. Most companies do require a doctor's note, and I'm guessing that's why the OP who called in so often is getting reprimanded. If you really do have a medical issue, you should apply to get FMLA--your doctor will have to sign off on it and it's unpaid. My DH has bipolar disorder and his doctor approves him for 5 days of FMLA that he can use if he has a day where he's too manic or depressed to make it to work.

Wait, what? There are people who sleep through the whole night and don't wake up? Is that normal? OMG do I have insomnia? I haven't slept solidly through an entire night in years.

In response to a confession. If you're diagnosed with insomnia, and it's to the point that it's affecting your job performance, get a note from your doctor and inform your employer. Otherwise, they're not going to take you seriously because insomnia is common. It's like depression. Almost everyone at some point in their lives will experience it. That's just reality. I wish we lived in a world where we could just call in when we feel like hell, but it is what it is. I agree with the other poster, if someone had that many unexcused call-ins, I'd fire them.
