I have insurance. I recently had a surgery done (that I had put off for 4 years) and after insurance paid their part I was left with close to $7000 worth of medical costs. That's without any complications post surgery. My recovery went very well and I was back to work within 6 weeks. Now imagine that something went wrong, imagine I needed a rehab stay, imagine I had some complications, or worse, couldn't go back to work at all. That's why a lot of Americans, even those with "good insurance" decide "you know what? If I get cancer or need dialysis I will just go onto hospice care. Fuck it"
