I have this client. He worked all his life building a business, and last year he sold it for almost 2 million dollars, and retired. His wife is set to retire this spring. I just found out he's been diagnosed with a large, malignant brain tumor. And it's moving fast, he's already in the hospital, not ever likely to leave. He won't even make it to his wife's retirement, let alone all the things they had planned to do together. This is just awful. He's in and out of consciousness, and what is he mumbling about in his moments of partial clarity? His tax return. Jesus. He's such a nice guy, this is just the worst.

What's funny about it? We pay for social security. I, for one, would gladly pay for medicare. Through my taxes. See, that's what taxes are FOR.... you give the gov't money, and they use it to fund programs that benefit you. That benefit SOCIETY. Jesus H. Christ. Gov't has been doing fuck-all with our tax dollars for so long that the notion they should be used to benefit citizens is viewed as big, bad, evil socialism. Give me a break. I'd rather die for lack of care because there was someone that needed care in line ahead of me, than to die for lack of care because I didn't have enough fucking money. And even if I did have money enough for decent health care in the US, even if I was filthy rich, I would STILL support a single payer medicaid-for-all system simply because NOBODY should have to die for lack of care because they don't have enough fucking money.
