I'm a recovered anorectic and my ILs make me so uncomfortable--every time I eat around them, my MIL starts with the comments like "Oh, I'm so glad you're eating! Do you want more food? I made dessert! Do you want some?" and my FIL chimes in with "Did you get enough food? You're supposed to be gaining more weight, right?" It pisses me off so much. They're both overweight and I don't sit there and tell them they're eating too much or tell them that they should be losing weight. Geez. I've talked to a few other women in my support group who have in-laws who do similar things to them. Why is it anyone else's business what I'm eating? Grr!

I can only lose weight counting calories. Even doing clean eating I figured out ways to over eat. Glad to report I am back on the counting wagon and already steadily dropping.

I was 100 pounds overweight. I had to hear fat jokes, how I was unhealthy and lazy and they said they were trying to "help" me by their constant criticism (they never gave me health tips on how to eat right). They gave me gym memberships and shakes for Christmas. My grandmother told me before my husband left to boot camp that he would find someone there instead of marrying me. When I got depressed and thought I was useless my mom said "Good, you used to be so beautiful when you were thin." On my wedding day, I was not told I was beautiful. I moved away three years ago and lost 60 pounds and now they call me beautiful and treat me with kindness and respect. They praise me and give me clothes. I hate my family. I realize that the weight I dropped wasn't just the physical weight but also them.

Ew. Don't lump all gastric bypass patients into one category. I know a few people that have had gastric bypass and they have kept the weight off for more than 15 years. Ignorant.

About 2 years ago, DH started exercising. Nothing fanatical, just like a 30 minute workout most days. Well, apparently now he's a health and fitness expert. For example, if we eat white rice (which literally happens like twice a year), he has to comment on how unhealthy it is. But when I point out how the raisin bran he eats every morning has more sugar than Fruit Loops, "that's different" because his sugar-laden cereal has fiber and fruit, which negates all the added sugar. And when I point out that having 6-8 drinks every day (beer and Scotch) is unhealthy, that's different too, because alcohol consumption has been shown to have health benefits, never mind that only moderate (i.e. not 6-8) alcohol consumption has been shown to have some benefit. He can be such an ass sometimes. Oh, and he could still stand to lose about 20 pounds. Everyone else in this house is a healthy weight. But he knows more than all of us.

My boss is younger than me and we've had people think he was my dad. It's because he was bald(ing) and overweight. He has since lost about 40lbs and become very fit and I swear he took about 15 years off his appearance. He just looks so much healthier. Even his skin looks younger and -glowier. (is that a word?) I think that how old you look is directly affected by how you take care of yourself. IMO the most important (besides the obvious- eat right and exercise) is to get enough sleep and drink enough water. You will look better. No doubt about it.

Severely restricting your calories does not lead to long term weight loss!!!

I am starting a new thing. At least 1 gallon of water a day, and if I get hungry I can have 1 celery stick with either 1 tbsp of ranch or 1 tbsp of peanut butter. So if I limit myself to 2 celery sticks a day nd nothing else, I should lose weight pretty quickly. I'm tired of being fat, and I always end up eating too much after the family gets home. UGH.

I'm 73, divorced and dating. My figure is 37, 26, 37. I am tall for a woman. Gave birth to 3 kids. Weight steady at 134. I eat right, lift weights, dance, and yoga. Men turn and stare with admiration. People think I'm 10 years younger. Anyone can do this. You age yourself by eating too much and sitting around doing nothing. Also by learning nothing new and getting too absorbed in snacks and TV, which keeps a person from doing more active healthy things. BTW, I have arthritis so it's not easy for me to be active either.

My mom is 72 and just retired this year. I'm not saying she'd never need a nursing home but she's about as far away from needing one as I can imagine! She fishes, camps, sails, runs, hits the weight room.... People always think she's about 15 years younger than she is! I hope they inherit her good genes! Actually, I think I have.... I am in my late 40s people often guess late 30s. I have no health problems to speak of and I still wear the same size I did 25 years ago. I know, knock wood and good genetics and all that.... But I dislike the assumption that everybody who is elderly or late into middle-age is falling apart and decrepit and headed for a nursing home.
