My niece is 10 and is also dealing with body issues. She hit puberty over the summer and went from being the cute little baby to an awkward tween. She's taller than me now and her shoe size is a men's size 10. She also gained quite a bit of weight and sprouted acne. It's just that awful, middle school puberty stuff that all of us go through. What sucks is that her mom treats her like crap now, because she's not the cute little princess anymore that she can parade around her friends. She's been spending a lot of time at my house, which is fine with me. We've had a lot of frank discussions about puberty, body issues, and the importance of being yourself.

My niece is only 10 and she's starting to put herself down so much. She says she's not good at science or learning other languages and she's self-conscious about her looks. She is exactly like I was at her age and I am trying so hard to be encouraging to her. I'm worried she's going to get an eating disorder, especially since her brother torments her about her weight.

I think he never did more because he thought I was out of the workforce for 15 years and would never find a decent paying job. So I would still be financially dependent on him. I knew I would be able to land something good. I have really great interpersonal and business skills and found an awesome job pretty quickly. I think he's stepped up his game because now he's like "Holy shit" she doesn't really need me. I'm kind of glad he's pulling his weight. But I'm kind of pissed off at the reason. And that he underestimated me. He thought I was just some poor little housewife. Well, f-you for not respecting me before.

Im starting to get a saggy chin and it's driving me crazy. Im no more than 10lbs overweight, if that. I think a lot of it is excess skin from being pregnant a few years ago. But i hate it, and i wish there was something i could do about it.

But that's not what the body-pos/FA community is referring to when they talk about "thin privelege". Because I do agree that most of the time, thin people do get treated better. But when they talk about thin privilege, they are talking about sitting on chairs without breaking them, being smaller than a size 3x so you can find "off the rack" clothes, only having to buy one airline seat, etc. It's like--at what point do we stop? I get that society isn't scaled for 400 lb people, but should it be? The human body is really not designed to carry that much weight, period.

I'm gunna be honest, I feel like a lot of the SJW community has kinda gone off the rails and into the weeds, not just the body positive people. I was an SJW for a long time, but recently I just can't get behind what's going on at all. 4Chan successfully started a "drop the B" from LGBTQ, loads of people fell for it and now tonnes of people are hating on bisexual people and want them "out of the community" because they have "straight passing" privilege if they are dating the opposite gender. Then you have people that want the T out and just hate transfolk. And on the other hand you have transfolk saying it's bigoted to not want to sleep with them, and body positive people saying if you don't want to be in a relationship with a morbidly obese person you're also a bigot. When did this all turn from "Let's stop being assholes to trans/gay/overweight/inset group here people and treat people with dignity" to, "This group isn't valid but I am, and if you don't wanna fuck me, you're a bigot."

I just saw someone arguing online that their child, at 40lbs and wearing a size 5T, was at a perfectly healthy weight. Said child is 22 months old. So your not-quite-2yo is the size of a 5yo, and you think that's healthy???

With a lot of people in the fat positive community, it's not even that they think health is "over-rated". They straight up think it's healthy to be 300lbs at 5'2". There's a lot of them claiming now that losing weight is impossible and is a myth perpetrated by the diet industry, they think that weight has nothing to do with health. This is what I think it's dangerous. This is not carrying a few extra lbs, it's hundreds of pounds overweight. I do think the BMI is silly, and carrying a few extra lbs is fine, I'm kinda overweight myself (although I am trying to lose it in a healthy way.) And if you're truly happy obese, then stay obese. But deluding other people and spreading this nonsense that being morbidly obese is perfectly healthy is where I draw the line.

I agree with a lot of this. but I have to disagree with you on thin privilege. I also used to be obese and am now a healthy weight. I am treated MUCH better now than I ever was when I was overweight. And I wasn't morbidly obese or anything. But people are just nicer to me, I struggled to find a job when I was overweight, and recently found one after looking for only a month. And it's twice as much money as I made before. I have absolutely noticed a difference in how I'm treated.

Some of the fat-positive people are so weird, too. They are very much anti-diet, but they also think health is overrated and "being healthy doesn't make you morally superior" etc. They claim it's "ableist" and some of the terms they come up with--fatphobic, thin privilege, etc. are absurd. I used to be obese. I am now at a healthy weight and I would definitely not say I have any sort of "thin privilege". It's called working out and eating right. That being said, I think obesity (oh, they don't allow that word in their community--gotta bleep it out) is a symptom of our toxic food. It's so easy to get too many calories when you are eating a lot of processed foods.
