I hated all the hype for American Sniper. I too said So What?! And definitely didn’t see it and still haven’t and most likely never will.

One of the only ways to handle gun violence in this country is to not vote for any politicians who take money from the NRA. Do your homework before you cast your ballot, because it's not just Republicans. It's the voters who keep putting these fuck nuggets in charge. They care more about padding their pockets than the safety of your children. As Americans, we can cry all we want about people getting shot, but essentially, it's our own fault for putting greedy, NRA humping sycophants into positions of power.

I think race mostly comes into play in terms of punishment for using illegal narcotics. POC are grossly over-represented in the prison system and are much more likely to receive a harsher sentence for something as innocuous as a small amount of marijuana. Race also comes into play in terms of how different substances are portrayed by the media. About ten minutes ago, I watched a commercial about drug rehab for people addicted to opiates. It was ALL white people in the commercial and soft piano music played while they talked about how rehab helped them. If you want to see how crack is viewed, tune into any episode of Cops. No one is saying that white junkies are new, but come on... let's be real. Opiate addiction is viewed as a tragic epidemic only because it affects white, middle class Americans; the people who always prided themselves on being above those crackheads on Cops.

although the opiod epidemic is sad and a huge problem that needs to be tackled, i kind of resent the fact that it's just now becoming an issue because a greater number of white people are being affected. these problems, along with crack addiction, have been prevalent in Latinx, Black, and native American communities for decades. but instead of rehab, supervised consumption sites, and second chances, they were given jail time.

I'm not a participant in your 'illegals' argument but I live in a rather rural conservative area and yes I have heard people say things like "Can't wait for them to ship those goddamn illegals out of here" and "Them muslims need to get their crap and go!" (sic) and "Get them fuckin niggers and Mexicans out of our country". If you think people don't talk/think/act like that you are woefully out of touch with the ugly side of American conservatism. It's right here, breathing and belching (bad grammar and all) in my neighborhood.

I'm native-born American but I have many relatives in other countries. The image of the USA abroad isn't very good right now.

My great grandfather was despised as an Irish man in the USA. He heard how dirty and filthy his family was. From the history channel "(Irish) refugees seeking haven in America were poor and disease-ridden. They threatened to take jobs away from Americans and strain welfare budgets. They practiced an alien religion and pledged allegiance to a foreign leader. They were bringing with them crime. They were accused of being rapists. And, worst of all, these undesirables were Irish.". Let's just replace that with Mexicans now...or Haitians. Human nature, huh? Yet you'd think that thinking was terrible if you were talking about in history class. "Oh, to think people once thought that way! How terrible!" But you turn around and defend this kind of talk against Haitians. Disgusting.
