I'm sure this will piss people off but here goes. It annoys me that people are so quick to dismiss all the myriad of allegations against Michael Jackson because he's such an icon. Many, many an icon has done some very awful things. Having legions of superfans obsessed with your music does not make you some sort of exalted being. I'm just really tired of victims of any gender being accused of being after money or fame when they come out. You would have to have Munchausen or some serious mental health issue to want to deal with the level of hate, scorn and ridicule poured upon you when you accuse a high powered person of something like that. I'm sure there are some seriously sick people out there who would lie like that, but I'm pretty sure for most of us it would not be worth the hate.

In fact, research shows that people in mentally taxing jobs need more sleep than those in physical jobs. So why don’t we not argue about which is “more deserving” somehow.

My parents live 25 minutes away from me and constantly want me to go over there for really dumb shit like pick up their mail or pick up a pastry or a bag of vegetables. I’m not driving an hour roundtrip for a damn piece of bread. It’s not even about being environmentally friendly. It’s just unthinkably stupid.

Dude, I work in an office, and I'm exhausted at the end of the day. If you think that physical exhaustion somehow trumps mental exhaustion then up yours.

I don't completely understand what you're asking, but focusing on hypotheticals is only going to fuck you up emotionally. No one can "save you" from mental illness. That mindset is incredibly unhealthy. It minimizes the biological, uncontrollable aspect of the disease and almost romanticizes it by suggesting that a hero figure can heal you. The first step in tackling depression is a visit to your doctor to talk about meds and a possible referral to a mental health professional.

Another mass shooting today. This time in Colorado. Democrats - We need gun control measures. Republicans - Guns aren't the problem. These shooters are mentally ill. Democrats - OK, let's provide people with free mental health care. Republicans - No, we won't do that. ?????? So we'll just do nothing? Seriously, what do Republicans suggest we do?

I hope I can heal my mental state while still living with alcoholic dh. Do you think it's possible? I can't move out yet due to financial reasons.

As a child of parents who are alcoholic and suffer form anger issues/mental illness, I can tell you what it was/is like for me, and maybe your DS feels similar. Asking for forgiveness means a lot. Letting your child know that the words you speak in anger are not how you feel about him, but are reflections of how you feel about yourself would also mean a lot. Tell him how much it would help you if he would go to therapy with you, but understand that he might not feel ready. And let him know that the best thing he can do for himself is get out of the situation of depending his parents, which means getting a job and being self sufficient as soon as possible. At least, that is what I wish my parents had been able to do for me. I know you are working to a better life, and it is a long, hard road, but I believe you will get there.

That's an interesting point you made. I'm Catholic and was married in the Church, and that's a big reason I stayed with my mentally/verbally abusive husband for so long. Divorce was not an option for me. Then one day I went to talk to my priest, and he told me this: "First, God didn't intend for you to spend the rest of your life in misery. Second, your husband already broke his vows to you, so in this case, divorce is forgivable." As it turns out, my ex-dh was diagnosed with a terminal disease in his early 50s, and I would have been his caregiver if I'd stayed. I can only imagine what a hell it would have been.

I just found out my benefits covers mental health services. Even though the co-pay is just $10 less than what I'm currently paying with my current therapist out-of-pocket, I think I will try out my insurance and see if the more flexible hours and new therapist can help me get out this serious downward spiral I've been on for the past several years.
