I'm sorry for you too. The thing is that he usually doesn't start drinking until late at night. He'll maybe have one or two during the day on weekends though. He usually drinks by himself when everyone goes o bed. I think he knows how much he drinks isn't normal, so he is doesn't want the judgement of people seeing him drink. He'll have a drink when out to dinner and such, but won't usually start his real drinking until there's no one around. This changes when he's with his dad, who is also an alcoholic. Because then someone else drinking as much as him, so it normalizes it. Luckily we don't see him often. He is very successful and does well at his job which he's had forever. That's the functional part. I would give him an ultimatum but there's no way I could afford to live anywhere in this school zone even with my good job, and I'm not moving my kids while they are in high school. It would devastate them. All bets are off after they graduate though.

I just found out yesterday that my high school friend has cancer, and it's incurable. Diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer 2 years ago. Did chemo and radiation to shrink tumor so they could remove it. All signs pointed to her being cancer free after the surgery. Then six months ago, they discovered tumors in both lungs and a spot on her spine. She is still doing amazingly well - skiing, working, etc. But she will need chemo for the rest of her life. Their goal is to just keep the tumors from growing. It's working now, but it won't work forever. She may have a few years, or she may have a few months. She was diagnosed when she was 52. Cancer sucks.

I think I have ADHD and I'm sort of a loss as to what to do about it. I live in the UK but the NHS is basically useless at treating this sort of disorder in adults, many local areas won't even admit adults can have it and even if they do, waiting lists are six years. And the cost of a private assessment is astronomical. I'm not functioning well at all which affects my income massively, which means I can't afford to see a private psychiatrist to diagnose me. Kind of a vicious cycle. I am saving but it's going to take forever. I feel very very sorry for people in the US who cannot afford medical care, and I know I should be grateful. But fuck, life is a slog right now.

I'm 48. My dad passed last night. I've dealt with relatives passing, but nothing like this. He wasn't even my biological dad. He was my stepdad and him and my mom have been divorced for 30+ years. He always kept in touch with my sister and I, and we have all been close to his wife for years, even my mom. Just sad. How will I go on? I saw him last night and he passed a few hours later. We all knew it was coming though, but still. He parented me and my sis out of love. Always. One of the only men in my life who was never ever mean to me. He had a heart of gold. I love you Henry. I will honor and cherish our memories forever. RIP.....

Nobody should drink soda, overeat, live a sedentary lifestyle, drink alcohol, jaywalk, eat fast food, avoid going to the doctor, stop taking their antibiotics too early, blow off tests their doctors order, not get regular oil changes, stare at strangers in public, the list could go on forever. Live and let live. Unless someone is blowing cotton candy scented vapor in your face, it's none of your business.

PT 2 Contrary to belief, I do not rule with an iron fist - he has plenty of freedom and few restrictions. But it's not too much to ask of him to let me know he's arrived safely (which I only ask in certain circumstances, such as that night), and if he can't get that into his head, there's a consequence. He is my only child, the one doctors told me I'd never have. He's precious and I worry. This worry - and I admit it may be extreme - stems from when I was a little girl. One day my mom went out and never came home. Yes, she died. So I will forever worry that those I love will not come home.

Nope. She DOES have to defend her decision, to her spouse for one. Look that person you promised to love forever... look him in the eye, and tell him that he hasn't done anything wrong but you want a divorce because you don't want to be married anymore. It makes her sound like a whiny 10th grader and not a grown woman who should know better. Relationships aren't disposable. People aren't disposable. You want your freedom? Then expect to have to defend your reasoning because the other person DESERVES it.
