Hoosier here, who's also spent a significant amount of time in the south. There's absolutely racism in both places, but it's so different up north. People can still be pretty brazen with their racist comments, but attitudes are different here. More often than not, if someone says something racist or homophobic, it's when they're with their family or friends. It isn't seen as normal public behavior. In the southern states I've been to, people are just super casual about racism, like it's a part of their daily routine. Growing up in Indiana, I'd never heard the n word used in real life until I visited a grocery store in Pensacola. My poor mom had a hell of a time explaining to me that it's different there and that it's never okay to use that word. I was probably about 8 or 9. Before that, I'd only heard it in movies. I've learned to expect it now, when I visit the south.

I'm the one who posted about being from the northeast and now living in the south. Just to clarify what I meant by more racist down south. I live in Texas. When I moved here, there were schools that still had segregated proms. There were restaurants that still had "Whites Only" signs in the window. And this wasn't 100 years ago, this was like 20 years ago. Yes, racist jerks exists everywhere. But the gov't here didn't step in and say, " You can't do that." No elected official was outraged. Those restaurants didn't go out of business because people protested or refused to do business with them. That would have never flown in the north. But it was just business as usual here. And most people didn't see the problem because these things don't make you racist in their view.

She never called women from the south bitches. She called them passive aggressive. After all the responses to her, I'm thinking there's some truth to the bitch thing, though. You also can't deny that the two responses to her post about her mil being racist WERE excusing racist behavior. Quit being obtuse.

The original "stop stereotyping southern women" post was full of racist innuendos. If you're defending racism because you have time on your hands, get a hobby. I suggest taking a basic sociology course.

I wasn’t being defensive about someone calling out a racist from the south. I was defending a poster who is apparently from the south. Racism wasn’t even part of the original post. I was calling out a dick move, which was purposely trying to offend someone for no good reason. I’m not “downplaying” white privilege. I’m simply pointing out that privilege isn’t an excuse to be a jerk to that person, but apparently some of you here think that it is. We have no idea whether that poster is racist. The original post was about southern women being passive aggressive bitches. I’m not offended. I was just bored and enjoy pointing out hypocrisy. You can enjoy thinking you immediately understand things. Lol

And I'm not the op you're responding to, but come the fuck on. Who're you trying to fool? Your mention and downplay of white privilege speaks volumes. Once I read that, I immediately understood why you're defensive about someone talking about a racist from the south. A little too close to home, huh? Also, sidenote, my mom's side is from Alabama, and you can bet your ass I've got people just like the awful mil in my family.

To answer your questions, she's from Louisiana, I'm from Minnesota (still live there, dh is a transplant), I tried to live in the south and only lasted three months because I couldn't stand the racist culture. I LOVE making racists feel bad because they should. My dh was born and raised in Texas and he talks about how racist his home state is every time we go visit my awful mil. If calling out racist behavior makes me insecure, go ahead and make me a sash that says Mrs Insecure. I'll wear it with pride. Use extra glitter, please! Oh, and keep in mind, the only people who get pissed off over racist stereotypes are racists. You're right! This is fun!

I’ve obviously got some time on my hands, so I’ll elaborate. You say your MIL is a walking caricature of an old southern lady. Is she actually from the south? It doesn’t matter, per se, because you’re still marginalizing an entire group of people, but if she isn’t, you’re only further negating your point. Do you live in the south or have you? Wouldn’t that make you a southern woman? It’s not like I don’t get what you’re saying. We’re all familiar with stereotypes. I just don’t see what’s so cool or funny about offending a stranger based on where they are from. You obviously offended this person by making a broad generalization. You seem to enjoy making a person feel bad, again, based on a stereotype of where they are from. I will make an assumption about you. You are incredibly insecure because only an insecure person would seek validation in this way, I could be wrong, but that’s how insecure folks tend to act, right? Maybe you’re on to something. That was kinda fun.

I am from the northeast, but I've lived in the south since I graduated from college, which was about 20 years ago. So about equal time in each area of the country. I can honestly say, that generally speaking, folks in the north are actually MUCH nicer than people in the south. Yes, I know that it's a generalization, and not everyone is like that, but A LOT of them are. People here are polite to your face, and then throw you under the bus as soon as you walk away. Passive aggressive for sure. If someone up north doesn't like you, you'll know it. No pretense, no bullshit. Much more genuine. And there are racist a-holes everywhere. But up north they know they're racist and own it. It's very black and white. Here people don't understand why blackface or singing Dixie at football games is offensive. People even justify using the n word and claim that using it doesn't make you racist. I could go on and on.
