Making fun of people's appearances just seems petty and immature. How is it fun? Does it make you feel part of things for the moment? Or just incredibly witty? It's something to think about. I don't think it's prudish or unrealistic to choose not to do that. I worked with homeless people and mentally ill people for so many years I've come to accept many forms of dress and appearance. In many cases they are unable to cope with life or simply trying to get by. When you have become sensitized to this it's awfully hard to bo back the other way....you simply change your point of view. I'm not a little miss sunshine by any account, seen too much to be that way.

I dropped meat 2.5 years ago, but I still salivate at the thought of a steak or chicken or bacon. I've had meat a couple of times since then, and it still tastes just as good to me. I just don't want to eat it for environmental, moral, and health reasons.

"I love how someone can say something narrow minded and judgemental, then when someone confronts them its the OTHER person who should "lighten up"!" You must know my inlaws! I very nicely suggested that "dark" is probably not a particularly nice or pleasant or progressive way to talk about black people. Yes, they say darks. Darks. Wtf. Oh, lighten, geez! I'm so uptight!

What the hell set that person off? NO ONE here is making fun of anyone who is mentally ill. Geez. Or as she/he said....good fucking grief indeed. - (Admin): Sorry, I approved that about 2 weeks too late, I just ran into it now. I think the OP was pretty good at articulating her feelings. So it still deserves to be posted.

Hey, guess what? People are allowed to be offended! I don't want anyone suggesting or "kidding around" that I'm mentally unstable just because I was suicidal in the past and dealt with depression for a decade. That was a deep, dark place - I felt, literally, like I was staring death in the face every single day. But I'm better now. I did a LOT of work to get better. And I don't think it's ok to joke about such a dark state, as if I was less of a person because I was mentally ill? No way!! Need I remind you of Robin Williams? We have a lot of work to do in this country to get people to understand mental illness and accept it and not fucking make jokes about it. And you know what else? If you need meds to get through every day, THAT'S OK! Because at least you get through the fucking day. Nobody should joke about that. Nobody. Have some fucking respect for people who have experienced a troubled mind and kept going. Have some respect for those who have experienced it and couldn't keep going. Good fucking grief.

Why is it when a man emotionally and mentally abuses a woman the first thing that is said is, Oh that poor woman and such an evil man but when roles are reversed and the woman is the abuser everyone says, What an idiot for putting up with her crap.

So sad that some adults just can't get past the bitchy, judgemental Mean Girls attitude. I can just imagine you snerking over your Starbucks at people who don't fit your code of acceptable attire.

I'm not perfect but I can tell you, I never feel that I am superior enough to anyone to question their parenting style. And I say that as someone who has the classic superstar kid, a very happy but academically average kid and someone who totally tanked in school. Life is long and being judgmental is just really an odd way to operate. I feel a lot of power in my life, so I don't need to try and make anyone feel badly about their parenting. Even online. I am amazed at the sanctimonious declarations. Again, I've lived 3 scenarios. Much of it is dumb old luck and the child him or herself. I wasn't passive. I cared. I was appropriately involved. But that involvement went down incrementally each year. As it should.

I'm joining WW tomorrow. My weight has crept up again and I need some help wrangling it back in check. I am not going to tell dh. He just doesn't understand my weight struggles and he is not supportive. I think he wants to be supportive, but he lacks the imagination or empathy to be and ends up being critical and judgmental. Today I was 206. Sigh. Last year this time I was 196. Still a lot, way too much for my height, but that means I've gained 10 pounds in a year.
