Unless you're trying to claim them for Ireland and if you are, go ahead and take them, please. Things have meaning specific to their countries and times. So you need to chill out with the fact that Americans are having a discussion about American culture with other Americans and speaking from an American POV. When you bring your country into a cultural moment in the States, yes, it's going to be read that way, and no amount foot-stomping or name-calling makes that wrong.
