There was a shooting last night at the complex where I grew up and where my parents still live. A man and 8-year old girl died. Someone's daughter, classmate, grandchild. WTF!! I visited them a few days ago and know this area is really bad, but this is horrifying and heartbreaking. I want to help my parents move out of there.

My sister is a lawyer and has been watching this trial. She also teaches a litigation class at a large law school, so she knows a thing or two about trial law. She thinks the prosescution is deliberately trying to get a mistrial because they don't really want him to be convicted. Can't be convicted if it never goes to the jury. She said they are doing things that any lawyer knows are not allowed. So much so, that she thinks there's no way it can't be deliberate. in here words, no one who passed the bar can be that incompetent. If it ends in a mistrial, there's no conviction and no riots / protests as a result of a not guilty verdict. So a win/win for them in their eyes.

I listened to an interesting podcast about a guy who basically started the evangelist anti-abortion crusade...they used to not care about it because they thought of it as a Catholic issue and they didn't like Catholics. Then a guy who wanted to be a movie director stoked another guy's hatred of abortion so he made a couple of films out of it. He never even cared much about the issue himself. Then decades later a doctor was shot in his home, he saw how horrible those people were to gay folks, and he realised the error of his ways. When men's lives were affected. Fuck all the women's lives he ruined, right? He seems to feel huge remorse now, but it still enrages me that it took a man to die before he saw how immoral it was.
